Information Technology Jobs by the Numbers

Here’s something you probably know: Information Technology (IT) jobs are booming.

Here’s something you probably didn’t know: the technology job market is healthy, so healthy in fact, there were nearly four-million open IT job positions in 2020. To put that in perspective, it’s nearly the same amount of jobs currently staffed by fast food restaurants in the US.

If you’re thinking about getting a job in IT then bravo to you — you’ve made an excellent decision for your future! We’re going to explore the IT industry employment statistics for you to prove just how big information technology jobs are expected to boom over the next 10 years.

Information Technology Jobs

The technology industry’s growth, the information and the adoption of the internet by, well, everyone have contributed to IT job growth. Today, open positions include everything from Cloud Computing Engineer, to Database Administrator, and Information Security Expert.

IT employers and educators generally recommend two courses of action when pursuing a career in IT. The first career strategy is to get an IT degree with business skills attached to it. This will enable you to become a hybrid IT worker, and more valuable because of it.

The second IT career strategy is to pick a specific IT function. Get yourself as many qualifications, certifications and credentials around it as you can. This makes workers indispensable. It puts you in a great position to help with emerging technologies.

Whichever path you choose, the list of IT specialists is constantly expanding. A noteworthy 20 percent of new IT positions are from emerging tech roles and skills.

A Simpson’s Diversity Index (SDI) gave the US tech workforce an index score of 57, which was higher than average for the US workforce.

We also know what percentage of jobs are filled by different ethnicities and gender.  For jobs categorized as computer systems analysis, 35.6 percent of roles are staffed by women, while 9.7 percent are staffed by Black or African Americans, 18.7 percent by Asians and 8.4 percent by Hispanics or Latinos.

These numbers fluctuate by differing job titles within the IT industry, and suggest a propensity toward diversity in the IT industry.

IT Job Stats 2021

The Information Technology job outlook is good. There are plenty of statistics to prove it.

Job security is important, and the present state of the IT industry is highly relevant. The Covid-19 pandemic negatively impacted IT jobs, but not nearly as much as other industries. August 2021 was an exciting month for the IT industry, as IT jobs in the US reached 4.79 million, which beat the previous record of 4.76 million that occurred right before the pandemic.

Further, a CompTIA study found that unemployment for the tech sector came in at 1.5 percent in August, compared to the national unemployment rate of 5.2 percent. That’s good news for job security, as the same study found that by the end of 2021, there will be 12.4 million tech jobs in the US.

Presently, the US tech industry represents a whopping 10.5% of the US economy, which is good enough for $2 trillion.

Salary Outlook for IT Jobs

It’s likely that talented and educated individuals will flock to IT and other tech jobs, as it’s estimated that technology jobs salaries are nearly double the national median. The median salary for tech jobs according to data from 2020 comes in at $91,250; eclipsing the national wage median of $41k.

Of course, job security and higher wages don’t always lead to greater worker satisfaction. A Toward’s Data Science study conducted research that graded the satisfaction of each job type within tech against their salary. Beyond Senior Executives and VPs, most positions were satisfied with their jobs, while Data Scientists, Data Engineers and Engineer Managers were among those who were beyond satisfied.

IT Employment Projections

Taking a look at technology employment trends is the next step in gauging whether IT is best for you. It’s been demonstrated beyond a doubt that wages are rising and job positions are open, but will that continue?

In short, yes.  It’s estimated that the IT industry will continue toad 667,600 jobs added every year, which equates to about 13% growth from 2020 to 2030.
